Compponents of a Balanced Lifestlye

The components of a balanced lifestyle can be hard to accommodate in the fast paced and often frantic world that we live in.  The demands of work, family and friends often leave us with very little time for ourselves.

To remain healthy and have good physical and mental health a number of things must be in place.  The first of these is a balanced healthy diet that takes in a wide range of different foods to ensure that the body gets all the different vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly.  The basics of a healthy diet are lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrain foods such as brown bread, pasta and rice, a lean source of protein and low fat dairy products.  Although it can be hard finding the time to cook meals from fresh ingredients it is well worth doing as too much of the food that we eat today is over processed junk that is laden with fat, salt and sugar.

The second part of a healthy balanced lifestyle is regular exercise.  Exercise is needed to maintain a healthy weight and to increase strength and flexibility of the body.  One of the reasons for the obesity epidemic sweeping the nation is that people are a lot less active than they were 20 or 30 years ago with more people than ever before having a sedentary lifestyle.

Getting enough sleep and keeping stress levels under control are two further components of a healthy lifestyle.  Lack of sleep and stress cause the body to release the stress hormone cortisol which has been linked to abdominal weight gain and heart disease.

Finding the time to fit all these components into your life as well as trying to find the correct work/life balance can be hard but for the sake of a long and healthy life it is definitely worth doing.
