How to Lose Weight Permanently

The secrets on how to lose weight permanently are simple – DON’T DIET!

Diets don’t work but lifestyle changes do!

Diets are short-term solutions to long term problems. Diets are a temporary fix that may help you lose weight, but do not sustain healthy weight loss. A high percentage of people who start a diet will lose weight, but only about 10-12% will sustain the weight loss for more than 6-12 months.

Healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle will help you lose weight and keep it off permanently. Lifestyle modifications that ensure consumption of healthy foods filled with vitamins, minerals, and nutrients gives you the energy to live a more active life. The following tips will help you learn how to lose weight permanently in a healthy way:

  1. Adjust your mindset to a positive way of thinking. Believe you can and ‘you can’! Program your mind for positive thinking! Always remember the self-fulfilling prophecy that you will achieve what you believe you will achieve.
  2. Don’t diet – change your lifestyle! Replace the word ‘diet’ with ‘lifestyle changes’. Make healthy choices with every bite you take and only eat foods that have nutritional value and can help you live a healthier life.
  3. Manage portions and never over-eat. Even over-eating healthy foods can lead to weight gain. Always manage portions and you can eat most anything you want to eat occasionally. Moderation is important to long-term weight management.
  4. Do not use food as a reward. Instead of focusing on food, think about other rewards that have more value. A good movie, a new outfit, a game of golf, or a new pair of shoes are far better rewards than food that only leads to more weight!
  5. Plan ahead. If you know you will be in a social setting that will tempt you to eat and drink more than you should, plan ahead. Eat a healthy nutritious snack before you go. Sip on water or unsweetened beverages and munch on fresh veggies or dip at parties. Always plan ahead and be prepared so you can ward off hunger that sabotages your plans. If you eat high calorie, high fat foods, cut back the next day and increase activity.
  6. “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”

    ~ Robert Collier

Get moving and remain active. The more active you are, the better your health will be. Activity helps you burn off calories and when you are active most days, you can actually eat more calories. Activity and exercise also give you more energy, stamina, and motivation to succeed! It also improves your mental health and well-being and reduces stress.
  7. Be consistent.  Research says that it takes 21 days for a new activity to become a part of your life or become a habit. Make a commitment to change your lifestyle for 21 days by eating healthier and being more active. Then continue to build on your new habits and the weight will fall off and stay off.

If you really want to know how to lose weight permanently, then start by getting your mind focused on positive outcomes. Try some of the above tips and add your own ideas to the plan. Keep your goals in mind and live each day to your fullest potential.

Lifestyle changes are essential to achieving your goal of long-term weight control.  Don’t lose another day of making changes that will help you reach your dreams.
