Simple Relaxation Techniques

An important part of living a healthy life and getting more enjoyment out of life is to learn how to relax. Simple relaxation techniques provide you with easy ways to relax throughout your day. They offer solutions for people who are stressed at work, overwhelmed at school, or over-tired from caring for children. Not only are simple relaxation techniques important for these situations, but stress management techniques can also help you take control of your health and manage your weight.

Relaxation is not just about enjoying peace of mind, although this is a tremendous benefit. Relaxation is also about relieving your mind and body from many of the challenges and frustrations you face every day. Taking the stress off of the mind and body helps you to reinvigorate your well-being and take control of your life and your health.

Other benefits of relaxation include reduced heart, lower blood pressure, increased blood flow to organs and muscles, and improved concentration. It can also boost self-esteem and self-confidence as you take control of your life.

Consider these simple relaxation techniques for better health and greater ability to manage weight:

  1. Meditate. Find a comfortable, quiet place where you can focus on your inner thoughts and self. Focus attention on an object or thought and clear your mind of the clutter that surrounds you. You can meditate at your desk, at home, outdoors, or most anywhere. It just takes the ability to focus.
  2. Deep Breathing. Sitting or standing, focus on your breathing. Inhale slowly and very deeply, pulling air deep into the lungs. Hold it for a few seconds and then purposely exhale with lips slightly open. Be sure to exhale slowly and fully, pushing all air from the lungs completely. Deep breathing is an excellent way to calm your mind and body and it helps relieve stress.
  3. Listen to Music. Music can be extremely calming and soothing – relieving much of the stress of the day. Choose music that has a pleasing melody and focus on each note. There are many artists who have created meditation or soothing CDs for just this purpose. Classical music is soothing to some people, while others prefer ‘new wave’ music.
  4. Progressive Relaxation. Taking time to relax your body from head to toe will also help relieve stress and anxiety. Start by feeling your feet and their weight and then consciously relax them. Allow them to become heavy. Move up your body from there, feeling your legs and the allowing them to become heavy by relaxing them totally.  Do this for each part of your body as you move upward to your head. Once you reach your head, allow all of the stress and tension that has been pushed from your feet to flow out of your head. Sit and relax completely for several minutes, enjoying how relaxed you now feel.
  5. Guided Imagery. Visualizing yourself in a peaceful setting or place you enjoy is a powerful way to relax and relieve stress. Close your eyes and imagine the place you want to be -- whether it’s a beach, the mountains, or a beautiful room. Imagine you are there and think about what is happening. Hear the sounds and smell the aromas surrounding you. Imagine the temperature – is it warm or cool? Continue with the imagery and put yourself in that place as you completely relax.
  6. “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”

Yoga. Many people find Yoga relaxing and calming. It is a good exercise that offers both mental and physical activity. Yoga is an age-old activity to calm and control the intellect, mind, and emotions and help you enjoy the important things in life while putting the negative things behind you.
  7. Write. If you’re stressed and need a quick break, consider writing. Putting things in writing, on paper or on a computer, can help you relax. Focus on thoughts and don’t obsess over spelling, punctuation, and format. A journal is an excellent tool for writing. Just allow your mind to flow freely and write whatever comes to mind.

These are simple relaxation techniques but they are by no means the only ways to relax. There is no ‘right’ way to relax and it is often a combination of activities.  Stress management activities encourage calm and relaxation so that you become more rested and peaceful. But relaxation techniques will only work if you use them!

Take advantage of some of these simple relaxation techniques to get started today for a more relaxing tomorrow.
