8 Simple Weight Loss Tips That Work

Losing weight is an important part of your healthcare if you find yourself carrying around a few extra pounds. Whether you have five (5) pounds or 50 pounds to lose, there are some simple weight loss tips that can help you achieve your goals. And losing weight is not as hard as you think when you know some of the secrets and tips to effective weight loss that also helps you keep the weight off for good!

Simple Weight Loss Tips that Work

  1. Don’t diet! Instead, change your lifestyle and substitute the word ‘lifestyle’ for diet. This makes it a positive direction in your life and helps you focus on changes that will carry you to a healthier life for the long-term.
  2. 'I can do this!'Use positive words and avoid negative thoughts and words. Instead of “I can’t do this”, “I have too much to lose so I give up”, and “I don’t know how to lose weight”, replace those negative words and phrases. Tell yourself “I CAN do this”, “I can eat healthier today and focus on baby steps”, and “I know how to lose weight be eating nutritiously and being more active”. You’ll be amazed at how positive self-talk changes your attitude and your middle!
  3. Eat more vegetables and make it easy to prepare them. Fresh vegetables are availablefresh food.jpg year-round in most places. That means you can buy seasonal vegetables at your local market. But if you don’t have time to shop for fresh all of the time, frozen vegetables are an excellent substitute. You can quickly pop a bag or two of fresh veggies out of the freezer, steam them with just a small amount of low-fat margarine, and season with salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Add them to rice dishes or pasta as the main course, with just a “side dish of meat”!
  4. Use portion control at every meal or snack. Watch how much you eat as much as you watch what you eat. Learn to measure portions effectively. For example, 3 ounces of meat is roughly the size of a deck of cards, 1 cup of cereal is about the size of your fist, and ½ cup of ice cream is the size of ½ of a baseball. Know how much you are eating before you start and focus on limiting yourself to reasonable portions. This makes it possible for you to still eat cake, pie, and ice cream when eaten in reasonable portions on occasion.
  5. Divide your plate. Imagine your plate is divided into two sections. Now divide one of those sections again. With this method, ¼ of your plate should be filled with grains or starchy foods such as pasta, rice, corn, or peas. The other ¼ should be protein such as lean meat, fish, poultry, tofu, cottage cheese, or other protein source. Then fill the last ½ of your plate with non-starchy veggies including broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, salad, turnips greens, or other vegetables. Adding a glass of low-fat or skim milk and a piece of fresh fruit rounds out your calories and slims your waistline! If this is too hard to remember, purchase a sectional plate to help you remember.
  6. Drink plenty of water. There is more to be said for drinking water than most people realize. There is no substitute for water and it actually gives you a feeling of fullness which keeps you from over-eating. Water is a vital component of cell generation and it helps internal organs function smoothly. It also helps transport oxygen-rich blood to your heart and organs. And best of all, water helps flush the toxins from your body and makes you feel better. Drink 6-10 glasses daily or as recommended by your doctor.
  7. Enjoy your food. Don’t just eat in a hurry and rush through a meal. Enjoy your food by savouring the taste, smell and texture. Allow your taste buds to enjoy the flavors and let your brain know that you are getting full before you over-stuff yourself. Take time to enjoy your food and you’ll find that you eat less – that’s the secret that Europeans have known for years! They exercise self-control and portion control and meal-time is a time to enjoy time with family and friends as much as it is to eat.
  8. Get moving. Everyone knows that a sedentary lifestyle is fraught with problems. It can lead to over-eating and obesity, depression, and a lack of ambition. But when you are active every day, you feel better physically and mentally. It takes about 3,500 calories to make a pound, so imagine how much faster you can lose weight if you get moving and burning those extra calories consumed!

These simple weight loss tips will help you get started on a nutritious and healthy eating plan that leads to better weight management and a life filled with more energy. Instead of obsessing about what you should have done to avoid the weight gain, focus on what you can do to change your situation today. Take it one day at a time and celebrate your successes along the way.

You only have one life to live so live it to its fullest!
